Like every other normal day I was on my way to the library to work on my graduation thesis, but this day felt different. As Balmorhea’s tunes resonated through my skull I took a different route than usual, past The Village Coffee & Music. As I went in Martijn greeted me with a big grin on his face and told me that he had something special for me. Usually I’m kinda reluctant to these kinda situations (big, brearded, grinning guys telling me that they got something ‘special’), but knowing that he knows his coffee I asked him whats up. He told me that they just received a freshly roasted batch of Panama Geisha naturals (Hartmann): “Some say Kopi Luwak is the most exclusive coffee ever, but that is bullshit, this is way harder to get your hands on. You need to try this, this coffee is packed with flavor that will blow you away!”.
He told me to take my time with this one, so I sat down and went along for the ride:
The ground beans had a strong cranberry/chocolate smell and prepared me for the next part. The clever dripper was placed in front of me so I could experience the whole aroma development during preparation and cooling of the coffee. This coffee has a rich and dynamic aroma which changes from Earl Grey-ish into a rich berrie/strawberry flavour that leaves you begging for more. The coffee texture wasn’t as ‘fat’ as I expected and I would describe the overall flavor as strawberry tea.

It has been an hour since I had the coffee and the flavour has not faded a single bit. And it has been an hour of procrastinating. I need to get back to work.

Some may classify me as a Paint it Black fanboy, but I don’t really care. This band keeps on delivering records that excite, move and enrage me. I just finished listening their new EP ‘Invisible’ for the 3rd time and ‘Invisible’ exceeded all my expectations (Yemin sounds more pissed off than he ever did!) yet I don’t know if I want to destroy everything around me or be extremely let down about probably not seeing them ever again.

Het is weer winter, ik heb mijn fiets al weer veels te lang niet aangeraakt. Dit jaarlijkse ritueel van wieleronthouding gaat gepaard met een angst voor het onvermijdelijke afzien in het voorjaar. Deze angst resulteert in eindeloos gehang in de sportschool waarbij ik tevergeefs mijn energie in de gewichten en machines probeer te rossen. Maar het mag niet baten: ik voel de steken in de spieren maar de koude vingers, de loopneus en gevoel van glorie blijven uit.

Het paradoxale aan deze situatie is dat zodra de eerste vlokken vallen ik elk jaar weer een ongekend niveau van wielerfantasme bereik. Het zien van de kampioenskleuren, Campagnolo versnellingsgroep of Wilfried de Jong geeft mij hetzelfde gevoel als luisteren naar Trial’s ‘Reflections’: Een gevoel van urgentie, kippenvel en de drang om alles, iedereen en bovenal mijzelf bont en blauw te beuken. Deze onbeholpen agressie en enthousiasme zal ik moeten opkroppen tot het moment dat ik mijn voorjaarsangst onder ogen durf te zien.
